Man Utd news: Graeme Souness isn’t holding back after the decision to sack Sir Alex Ferguson

Graeme Souness has slammed Manchester United over their decision to sack Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Scot has given up his role as ambassador as INEOS continues to cut costs at Old Trafford after they acquired a minority stake in the club late last year.

Ferguson is still welcome at United games but is now banned from playing in the dressing room and will not act as an ambassador.

It’s a decision that has angered many figures in the sport, including Eric Cantona and Dwight Yorke, who are already competing against the fallen giants.

Souness, who writes for the Daily Mail, has now revealed his stance.

The former Sky Sports pundit branded the decision a “disgrace” and mocked Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other United bosses by labeling them “geniuses”.

“I have to say, I find it hard to imagine any action that the geniuses currently running Manchester United could have taken to antagonize more people than terminating Sir Alex Ferguson’s contract as club ambassador and shutting the door on him show,” he said.

“I’m trying to calculate how they could actually come up with such an idea at a time when the goodwill of so many supporters is waning.

“This decision will have alienated many more people against them. The blame will now not only lie with Erik ten Hag.”

“INEOS manages a club that is 14th in the league and has made its worst start to a season in 35 years. So they sat in a room and said to each other, ‘Right. What can we do about it?’ Lose what little goodwill we have left? I’ll tell you what – let’s sack the biggest ambassador we have and restrict his access to certain parts of Old Trafford.’

“This is the man who led United through the greatest period they have ever experienced.

“His 26 years at Old Trafford brought achievements that surpassed any other period in the club’s history. He is without a doubt the greatest employee the club has ever had.”

United insist he is still welcome at Old Trafford. But surely you want someone like him to be around you as often as possible?

“Surely you want the world to know that you treat the pillar of your club with the respect his efforts deserve? Apparently not.”

Continuing his criticism, Souness added: He seems to be viewed as just another member of staff. Just another casualty of INEOS’ cost-cutting measures.

“What a shame. Where on earth is the respect? I have to tell these owners that they have embarrassed themselves.”
