Brendan Schaub predicts trilogy fight coming for Conor McGregor in Nate Diaz scenario

Nate Diaz remains one of the most polarizing stars in all of MMA, despite not currently having a promotional contract. And why not? After all, the former UFC pioneer was part of one of the most iconic moments against the biggest icon in all of MMA when he shocked the world with a handout Conor McGregor his first UFC loss in 2016.

And even though he left the promotion two years ago, the Stockton native still dreamed of becoming UFC champion (which seems to have changed recently), which is only possible if he one day joins the Dana White-led promotion returns. But podcaster and former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub believes the “only” reason the UFC would have Diaz back is for a trilogy with McGregor.

On their “TFATK” podcast, Schaub and his co-host Bryan Callen talked about Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone coming out of retirement and potential opponents for him. Callen felt that a rematch between Diaz and Cerrone would be a perfect comeback fight for the veteran. “Yeah, get Nate back, we’d all like that… That’d be a good fight, Donald [Cerrone]I still have unfinished business [with Diaz]”,” Callen said.

But Schaub felt that Cerrone was too small a fish for a star like Diaz to make a comeback. “I don’t think so, no. If Nate comes back, the only fight they would have would be with Conor [McGregor] so that’s not going to happen… But wouldn’t you rather see Conor?” Schaub asked. Callen remarked ruefully: “I would, but I don’t think it will ever happen.”

But Schaub completely disagreed with Callen on this point. In fact, the former UFC heavyweight “guaranteed” that Diaz and McGregor will fight each other at some point, but perhaps not in the UFC. After all, both men have won one fight each in their two previous duels and a trilogy to resolve their unfinished business will be a blockbuster fight.

“Guaranteed [McGregor-Diaz 3 happens]. It may not happen in the UFC, but I guarantee we will see Conor fight again. But if Nate came back, they wouldn’t waste it. And that’s no disrespect to “Cowboy.” [Cerrone] but they would give it to him [Diaz] Conor, because this fight only lasts for a limited time, you know? said Schaub. It seems that Schaub feels that if McGregor-Diaz 3 doesn’t happen in the UFC, it could happen outside, perhaps at BKFC. However, Diaz doesn’t want that.

Nate Diaz wants a “real fight” with Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor has two fights left on his UFC contract. And with his MMA career on a steep downward trajectory and “Mac” becoming part owner of BKFC, some believe the Irishman may not re-sign with the UFC. Instead, he could go to BKFC and help grow it into a major combat sports promotion, where he could have rematches with old rivals like Nate Diaz.

However, Diaz has completely ruled that out. “I don’t want to fight him [McGregor] albeit in naked combat. I would like to have him in a real fight because we made history there and we have to finish what we have to do.” he said.

On the other hand, the Stockton native doesn’t seem all that excited about returning to the UFC either. Why? Well, because you can’t just find someone in the promotion that’s exciting enough to want to come back. It appears that Diaz has given up on his previous ambitions for a UFC championship. “If someone good comes in and does something, I’ll come back and put a stop to them.” Diaz added.
