Bangladesh have sacked men’s team head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe for “misconduct” and “violation of working conditions”.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said in a statement that Hathurusinghe was terminated on Tuesday and after receiving his reply, an emergency meeting of the board was held on Wednesday where his contract was terminated.
Local media say, external A player claimed the Sri Lankan slapped him during the 2023 World Cup in India.
A BCB statement confirming Hathurusinghe’s termination on Thursday said: “After considering all factors, the Board found Hathurusinghe’s explanation to be unsatisfactory and unacceptable and found that his actions were consistent with misconduct and dereliction of duty. His termination is effective immediately.”
AFP and Indian media outlet Cricbuzz quoted a press conference in which BCB president Faruque Ahmed said: “From the moment I learned about the incident from the newspapers, I felt really bad.”
“I’m not defending anyone, but anything can happen in the heat of the moment.
“But you can’t beat a national player. That’s not popular. That is the right punishment. This should have happened a long time ago.”
The BBC contacted the BCB but was unable to verify the allegations against Hathurusinghe.
