Liam Lawson has revealed the expectations Red Bull have placed on him for his F1 return.
The New Zealander has replaced Daniel Ricciardo for the rest of the season and will join Yuki Tsunoda at RB.
Despite only having five Grand Prix starts to his name, Lawson has been linked with a stint at Red Bull next year to replace Sergio Perez, who has struggled with form for much of the season.
When asked if targets had been set to get a seat at Red Bull next year, Lawson told the media RacingNews365: “That’s very far ahead.
“Honestly, the goal or goal set is the same as it has always been since I was 17 and joined the program.
“It all depends on the performance and of course they will see it that way. Yuki has done a very good job in recent years and especially this year.”
Tsuonda passed Lawson three times in qualifying, twice ahead of the 22-year-old, while Lawson’s ninth place in Singapore was the team’s best result in the first 17 laps.
Lawson claimed he was only focused on beating the Japanese driver in his second Formula 1 outing to impress Red Bull again.
“He [Tsunoda] is the standard for them to compare me to,” he said. “He’s the only one in the same car as me, so I get compared directly to him.”
“I think the goal or expectation from them is for me to compete alongside him.
“As far as my goals for next year or in the future, I have no idea at all, but that is the goal that has been set.”
